Hmm... I'm going to need more information before I can answer that. What are you using it for? (your own site or an ebay type of site) If your own site, where are you hosting? and what type of account do you have? Same with paypal, what type of paypal account are you looking at?

As far as the percentage, any processor is going to take a percentage. Paypal, Bank, Google API (though I'm actually not positive on them, but I seriously doubt they do it for free).

I have had a pay pal account for years, I've never paid any thing for it. They're may be other types of paypal accounts I'm unfamiliar with, but it costs nothing to receive and send money using pay pal.

I use my pay pal all the time to send money and on ebay it is the fastest and safest way. Keeps others away from all you bank acct numbers and your cc info. Never had people pay me on it but that is what everyone on ebay seems to prefer. Even those with buisnesses that take cc's. they still request you pay with pay pal

There are some issues with using paypal in place of a merchant account with a bank.  It is not nearly as safe, or as stable, and you really have no control over it.  Most larger business don't accept paypay for these reasons, as well as because it's too easy for the person submitting the payment to cancel it on their end.

Having said that - it's cheap, it's easy, and it generally works.  Most smaller start ups and individuals don't need the hassle of opening a merchant account.

This is because eBay will backup the deal, paypal will not though.

That's pretty much the opinion that get from Merchants who have been at it for a while. From what I hear, Paypal is all about backing up the customer, but not the merchant. My biggest recommendation to CYA is to see if their set up has a "charge automatically" option. It helps a little with the cancellations.

Yeah, it's probably the best bet until she gets enough money coming in and going out to warrant a bank account. I've dealt with small busuness accounts at the bank and they're kinda known for being douche bags at most banks. Never bank with Compass. We switched to Whitney and were a little more pleased. I buy and sell using paypal and it hasn't given me any problems, except people trying to get my info, but that's just hacker/spybot shit.

i don't know what nick is talking about here.  its free if you are buying things, (i.e. sending out money) but if you are receiving things, there is a 2% (i'm not certain on that number) deduction for receiving payment though.  just figure that in when you are setting price.  aside from that though, i've heard nothing but good things about paypal.

It takes a small percentage of your earnings depending on what kind of account you have with them. There are 3. I am going to set one up for moms Etsy page, she hasn't put up her garments yet because they are hard to fit on people you have never met but that is her problem not mine. She has got some of her fairy dolls ant other things though so if you know anyone looking for some odd fantasy stuff to give as a gift send them her way if you think about it =) her "shop" name... Chameleon Dreams =)
Thanks guys.

Well, I assume there is some benefit to having the kind of account that takes a percentage? Does it provide oral stimulation from beneath your computer desk? That could be worth it.

when my sister sent me money via paypal, it deducted a couple of percent out of the amount.  maybe we did something wrong.
