It's because of my profession that I'm so relaxed about this. It's probably pretty safe to say I read more medical journals daily than this group combined does in a month. The media has taken a virus that has a very minimal-moderate threat level and blown it way out of proportion. And because of that, the government is taking extra steps to far to quell the ensuing panic.
Trust me, it's just the fucking flu.
same way i will tell folks not to freak out about child molesters and child abductions (stranger). the reality is that your children are in far bigger danger from a friend or family member than they are from a stranger abduction or rape. the reality is that a good, true stranger abductions are incredibly rare. we get somewhere to the tune of maybe 100/ year across the entire US. in houston, we will see maybe 2 or 3 per year. you spread that out over our roughly 6 million person population, and the chances of that happening are infinitesimal. so the chances are that your kid will get seriously injured in a car accident, hit by lightning, or stick something in an electrical outlet and shock themselves. the danger here is that we are making our kids terrified out of the outside world and encouraging them to turn into couch potatoes. the park and the kids in the neighborhood are no longer "safe". kind of like the fact that swimming pools kill hundreds of times more kids per year than handguns, but news stories about deadly swimming pools are not as sexy as news stories about guns. ok, i'll get off my soapbox. you all know what i am saying.
