So we're watching the olympics and I'm noticing a trend here. How is it every single athlete who has a strong chance of winning and\or overcomes all odds to get the gold (or at least a medal) has some crazy background sob story? Jesus Christ, it almost seems that a story of persaverance and beating odds is a requirement for olympics material.

After awhile it starts to just get funny. For instance, Womans relay race in swimming Torres has pushed hard and overcome all expectations at not only being 41 years of age but also she (dun dun DUN) had a baby a couple years ago. To TOP beating those 'hindering' odds, her coach is unable to be there in Beijing because he has been hospitalized in Maryland for (get this) a rare blood disorder.
Torres and her team got the silver and beat the US record.

Its better than a soap opera. "All my Children in the Olympics"

they will go into all kinds of details of how the american athlete over came the fact that his parents got a divorce when he was 12 but complete neglect to mention that the dude from iran has his family being held hostage and they will be executed if he doesn't place.  the whole thing is a bunch of bullshit.  not to mention we are pumping billions of dollars into china, the country with possibly the worst record of human rights violations in the world.  i'll not have fucking part of it.

So if ya watch the opening ceremonies of the Olympics I thought i was watching the greatest fireworks display in history of any event ever, but i found out today that not only are athletes taking steriods so are the fireworks. Breaking news on espn today showed that alot of the fireworks were computer generated for the tv audience. How sad is it that the country that invented fireworks had to do this to make a good presentation.Oh aslo i forgot to mention news came out today that the singers of the anthem for the olympics also was lip syncing.

for every dollar of "your" money you spend, china actually owns 60 cents of it. How nice, right?

Tiananmen Square looks a lot more friendly through a filter.

How many attempts at revolution and how many massacres has China covered up... and the majority of people in the country have no idea. It would be like if we'd lost the American revolution and just 30 years later everyone forgot it happened.
The majority of people at the more recent '89 Tienanmen Square massacre were college students who just more or less wanted to know what democracy was! They were unhappy with the way things were but they barely had an idea of what else was possible. I'd wager the majority of the population still doesn't know.
Their government not only filters their internet to hide their corruption and tyranny, but they also alter their history and other text books constantly to always show the government in a favorable light and to keep certain people ignorant so they won't revolt...again.

And we let them have the Olympics... Not only are they utterly undeserving of such an honor, but they don't deserve the likely huge profit they'll get because of the tourism.

Fuck China.

my mother was there this last year. Apparently they think tiananmen square was an accident. The tour guide also made it quite clear she was not interested in debating the subject

Damn...kinda close minded, eh?  I mean, then why even bring it up if you aren't willing to think about new information?

History is usually written by the status quo of the time, so in that sense, I have no doubt that our own history is colored to favor the perspective of those writing it. However, with the inherent competition of ideas and the (more or less) free press, it is actually very hard to majorly cover up significant events in our country. If something significant happens, you better believe someone will document it some how, and our government is severely restricted when it comes to suppressing an individuals speech.
Just go read my blog on myspace... If I said similar things in China, you probably wouldn't ever see me again. They're main stream media is exclusively created by the government.

We know about the LA riots, project MK-ULTRA, Hiroshima & Nagasaki, the two million defenseless Korean villagers we bombed, the Japanese we put in concentration camps, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam war protests and riots, the Stonewall riots, the Downing Street memo proving Bush was trying to find a reason to go to war with Iraq before 9/11, we even know about our current government using torture, building secret prisons abroad and concentration camps right here, right now... nearly all the dirt you want on our government is available with a bit of research.
This is not the case in Communist China. Their government has far more power over their citizens than the U.S. ever has...
