This story is kinda disturbing in so many ways - some part of me feels a little bad for the two girls involved, but another part of me wants to tell them to grow the fuck up and stop whining that people made fun of you on the internet.  I mean, holy shit, forums are like the goddamn DMZ of shit-talking.

If this comes to full close, them whining bitches (both male and female) everywhere will be able to sue (or at least have precedence to do so) people for making fun of them on the internet, and I find that fucking ridiculous.

This makes me wonder about the log policy I have on these forums.  Does anyone care that your IP address is logged whenever you post, and that it is possible that if someone were to bring such a lawsuit against you or me, that I could be forced to reveal that information?

I'll be reviewing the logging policy shortly.  My gut instinct is to set it up so that just about nothing is logged anymore, for fear of shit like this.  They can't subpoena what I don't collect.

I'm all for collecting only what's needed and consistently useful. I'm not afraid of getting sued or anything, but there's no sense in collecting information you have no use for and would likely only be used for "negative purposes."

i'm actually a huge fan on internet anonymity.  its an ultimate form of true free speech.  there are no repercussions when you don't have to worry about your reputation.  it kind of pulls the mask off of what people really are deep down.  they laugh when people they don't know die.  they secretly hope powerful women get raped.  they talk shit about EVERYONE.

its scary.  real freedom is fucking scary.  if you can't handle it, stay the fuck off my internet.  go get one of those internet filters that keeps all the "bad" sites out.  pussies.  i hope those cunts do get raped.  not because they were powerful, but because they were weak.  fuck them.  they can rot in hell.

and i was just re-reading the article.  they choose to file the law suits as "jane doe I" and "jane doe II."  so when it suits them, they can remain anonymous but no one else is allowed to.

Freedom of speech means freedom to say whatever the hell you want. Good god, Bill O'Reily and Nancy Grace are two of the biggest degenerate fuck-heads in "media" (note I put the quotations because frankly, neither of them have any journalistic integrity in my opinion), go on the air and constantly blather out the most inane stupid bullshit anyone could EVER concieve, but I support their right to do so. I have nearly everything either one says, and it saddens me that people buy into what these fakes have to say, but they ARE ALLOWED TO SAY IT. And I would support that right if either came under scrutiny.

As far as this forum, Evan, a disclaimer would nullify any concerns. The power of posting the words "enter at your own risk" go a long way. If people 'walk' in here knowing full well we don't give a fuck if feelings get hurt, well, no one can claim blindsight.  It might not be full proof, but it'll help protect you, and us. For instance, hey.. um.. Dave (your a good random target), you're a blumbering queph-ball who smells like sour milk and bacon!

Actually, nine times out of ten those internet "disclaimers" that basically tell you to enter at your own risk, they get thrown out of court.

I actually hear stuff like this on a weekly basis. "I searched for my domain name and found someone talking shit about my company" "Yahoo answers is ruining my business" my favorite is still the guy who called in because when you searched for his name, the new auto population feature (new at the time) would fill in "Child Molester" after his name.

Yahoo's stance is that if the person doing the shit talking isn't violating our TOS, we don't care. Can you report it for review by TOS, sure! (good luck with that) You feel that this person is doing something illegal? slander? defamation of character? harassment? Contact your local police department. In 99% of the cases, get ready to learn what "They're all going to laugh at you" means first hand, but it is your right. Do we collect information for legitimate reasons? Hell yes, because every now and then that 1% sneaks through and it is legitimate harassment.

um, upon further reflection i think the solution here would be moderators.  if the site had just torn the comments down, that would have been the end of things.  if the guys who posted didn't like being torn down, they could open their own website and say whatever they want.
