New job, and the joys of disk redundancy

So, my new job is going great.

I really enjoy what I am doing, and my direct boss is giving me free reign to decide how things should be set up. This is good in that I can set things up the way that I think they should be, but bad in that if problems arise because of how things are implemented, I am the only one to blame.

Anyways, things are going good – progress is being made, and things are stabilizing there. I’m learning a good bit of Exchange, and putting my AD/GPO skills to good use.

I’ve been working kinda late, because we are behind and we have a lot of catching up to do. I predict that within a month we will be mostly caught up.

I had a drive failure on the RAID array that hosts a couple of my servers (running in VMWare Server). Of course, I didn’t have a hot spare, so I shut down the array and ordered a new drive. The rebuild went fine, and the old drive is still in warranty, so once it gets back, I’ll have a hot spare.

Almost to the new job

So, I start my new job on Wednesday. I’m looking forward to it with a mixture of fear and nervousness. I’ve never left a job that I actually liked before. I’ve always held on to jobs until I can’t stand them, and then started searching for something new, like I did with HCCS.

Now I find myself in the new position of leaving a place that I enjoy – I like the people I work with (almost all my friends), I enjoy most of the work, and I like my immediate boss. The new job offers more money and a chance to do more what I really want to be doing – system administration.

So I’m looking forward to Wednesday with a bit of trepidation – but a lot of anticipation.

I also apparently didn’t miss much at Excalibur this past weekend – super-cold freezing and swampy were the words that Ethan described it with.

I spent Easter with my folks, doing the standard family get-together – my Dad’s side of the family always has a big easter egg hunt and family meeting. Its nice to see the people I only see on Easter and at family reunions. However, the previous generation to mine has more memories together – it seems like our generation needs to get together without the older folks and have a little fun, build some real family memories. I think several of them are in Houston. I’ll have to see if I can arrange something.

Good Friday – Day Off!

So, I have Good Friday off – that makes this the last day of the work week for me. Only 2 more days working at my current job.

Today, my boss took me out to lunch (I had Falafel – What? Your kids don’t like Falafel?) and we talked about random stuff. Then there was a semi-surprise outing after work – had a get-together with a decent number of people from work, buying me drinks and stuff. It was very nice – and definitely unexpected. I’m still a little toasted. I’ll definitely miss the people I work with now – my boss has been really good to us all, and my co-workers – well, I’ve known most of them for ages.

I’ll work Monday and Tuesday of next week, and then its off to the New Job ™.

I’ve already got my email, cell phone, fax number, work number, and contact info for the new gig, so that will be nice.

Anyways, what we did tonight – we went out to the Kelvin Arms for a few drinks, and most everyone bought me a drink – which I really appreciated. Afterwards, a group of us went to the Thai restaurant upstairs from there and had some dinner – it was excellent. Then we kinda went our separate ways.

Another person kinda piggy-backed onto my farewell party – someone else at my job is leaving, and today was her last day. So that was nice – more people than I expected were there, and it was pretty fun.

I’ve got a doctor’s appointment tomorrow – got to be up early even though I have the day off, which kind of sucks. Alas, my hurting back beckons. Of course, it doesn’t hurt once I’ve had a few drinks…but I think a perpetual state of drunkenness would be bad as well (maybe bad for the people around me, at least).

I think I’ll chill at home for now and just relax – this weekend is Easter. I guess I’ll be doing the family thing.
